Youth Counselor
Duties Responsibilities
- Lead educational activities; runs Peer leadership Program;
and provides intake assessment and referral services
- Report to Youth Coordinator/Director
- Undertakes outreach to youth in a wide variety of settings
including schools, community agencies, health centers/hospitals
and churches/temples.
- Organizes and teaches students in the Vietnamese Bilingual
Program in grades 9-12. Develops and maintain linkages with
school personnel
- Organizes and teaches educational workshops ages 12-21 at
summer education and employment programs. Develops and maintains
linkages with program personnel.
- Organizes and teaches educational workshops for parents of
youth ages 12-21.
- Oversees the daily operation of culturally-specific Peer
Leadership Program involving 5 Peer Leaders in Year 01 and 6
Peer Leaders thereafter. Trains and supervises the Peer Leaders.
- Participates in the selection, adaptation and development
curricula and materials to use in educational activities with
youth and parents. Participates in the production of material on
related issues for the agency newsletter
- Perform intake assessment with new youth clients who have
participated in at least three program activities and other
youth as appropriate.
- Refers youth clients for other needed services to other
agencies. Facilitates successful referral by providing support
services such as interpretation, escort and advocacy services.
Undertakes home visits as needed. Establishes and maintain
linkages with a wide range of referral sources.
- Undertake case management of clients including maintaining
regular contact by phone or in-person and following-up on
referrals.
- Participates in local networks of youth service providers
and peer leadership program. Attends regularly meetings of
interagency groups including Dorchester Alliance for Community
Health (DACH) and the Vietnamese Provider Task Force.
Participates in training and other service providers and school
personnel on Vietnamese health care beliefs, customs and
concerns and related community issues
- Participates in individual supervision meetings with the
Youth Director every week and in program planning, development
and evaluation meetings every other week with Youth Director and
the agency's Youth Development Consultant. Participates in
department meetings every other week and agency staff meetings
every month.
- Participates in staff development activities including:
monthly in-service training sessions: and, local workshops and
local and national conferences related to youth development and
education.
- Maintains client files and other program records as
directed.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Qualification
Bachelor's degree. Two years of human service experience with
Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in the United States, preferably
in youth work, health education, education or social services. Two
years of experience working with Vietnamese youth in the United
States. Fluency in Vietnamese. Excellent spoken and written English.
Knowledge of the Vietnamese community in Greater Boston desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Undertakes outreach to potential clients and to community
providers.
- Assists with the development of program outreach and
educational materials. Translate material from English to
Vietnamese.
- Provide social services to individual clients. Services
include information and referral. Interpretation, translation,
form completion, letter-writing, crisis intervention and
advocacy.
- Escorts/accompanies clients to other agencies to obtain
services as needed.
- Undertakes home visits to clients as needed
- Refers clients to other VACA programs and to services at
other agencies as appropriate.
- Maintains files of information on a wide range of services
available from public agencies and community organizations.
Familiarizes self with these resources.
- Assists the Social/Health Services Dir3ector in planning and
leading community-wide meetings.
- Maintains program records and client files as directed.
- Participates in biweekly program meetings, monthly
department meetings and other staff meeting as needed.
Participates in program and department planning. Development and
evaluation activities.
- Participates in staff development activities including
in-service sessions, conferences, workshops and training program
as agreed upon with the Social/Health Services Director.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Qualification
Two years of college required. one year of human service
experience with Vietnamese refugees and immigrants in the United
states, preferably in resettlement, health, mental health or social
services. Fluency in Vietnamese. Good proficiency in English.
Knowledge of the Vietnamese community in Greater Boston desirable.
